Fiction Editing

If you’ve got a first draft, whether you’re a seasoned professional or a new writer, we can help you take your manuscript to another level of excellence.  With professional writing techniques, you’ll finish your revision and see marked improvement in your story.

Developmental Edit [sometimes called Content or Substantive Edit]

In this kind of edit, I provide a panoramic view from 40,000 feet. You will see your story as a whole, be able to identify the parts, and understand how they are working together. I’ll provide suggestions to address missing parts and how to make the whole thing more effective.

Your voice and your vision are paramount. The edit delivers a plan for you to make the wise choices about what to change and what to leave untouched. The parts of a novel I will address include

The overall structure (plot)

  • Scene structure
  • Characterization
  • Pace
  • Dialogue
  • Point of view
  • Setting
  • Transitions

Line Edit

In a line edit, I travel through the manuscript several times, word by word, sentence by sentence. Protecting the author’s voice and vision for the story, I use Track Changes and comments to note and explain how to power up language and improve the read. I pay attention to:

  • Consistency of voice, tone, spelling, capitalization, and characterization
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Redundancy and the use of intentional repetition
  • Echoed words
  • Passive and active voice
  • Point of view and head hopping
  • Dialogue
  • Missing words, wrong words, and typos
  • Pacing and ways to improve it
  • Suspense vs. surprise
  • Ways to power up the language

A Comprehensive Edit includes both the developmental and line edit.

One-on-One Mentoring

We come alongside and help you write the book from start to finish if that’s what you require. Or we can plan out a period of time to work together to accomplish a specific writing goal. My authors remember the lessons they’ve learned in these sessions, and all their future writing is better for it.

Hey, Teresa,

You’ve believed in this project from the get go, and you have trusted me and taught me so much. I just want it to be made known that I am very grateful to know you and have such an incredible collaborative relationship with you.

I told a Hollywood friend the other day that working with you has been the most intense, valuable, extraordinary creative experience of my life. Thank you for believing.

Cheers,

Alex

To my first editor, Teresa Crumpton, at AuthorSpark.org. Thank you for offering just the right mixture of compassion and common sense and for giving me the courage to allow someone else to read my words.

“Teresa has the global eye for the big picture—what  works and what doesn’t work. She also has the eagle eye for detail so necessary in the final polishing stage before submission. Without fail, her valuable comments and suggestions are offered with skill,  encouragement,  honesty, and compassion.”

“Teresa Crumpton pinpoints and corrects the usual  grammatical suspects, but she also makes suggestions that strengthen the plot, pace, character motivations, and more. She hunts down errors and weaknesses in the manuscript and builds confidence by highlighting the  author’s strengths as well. Working with Teresa is a pleasure. She edits, polishes, motivates, and inspires. I value her detailed feedback, expertise, and experience.”

“Teresa Crumpton is an outstanding editor whose
knowledge, training, and suggestions helped me elevate
my writing to a marketable level. I was signed by an
international agent who sold not only my thriller, which
debuted December 2017, but the entire series.”
